1946 : Hindu Muslim riots were happening across India. Reaction of Calcutta Jihad and Direct Action Day under the direct support of Muslim League govt in Bengal was seen in Bihar & other parts of India. It continued till partition was accepted by Congress in 1947. Then, after partition of India in 1947, Lakhs of Hindus were killed in Pakistan. Their Dead bodies were brought to India through Railways. Almost 10 Lakh people were killed. Hindus in India were enraged due to this. Reaction of this was seen in Hindustan Many Muslims were getting killed. Initially, it was restricted to Border areas of Punjab & Bengal. But, it was fast spreading across India. It was a challenge before Muslims who decided to stay in India. Gandhiji was trying to end it. But, nobody was listening to him.His moral influence had also come down. It was an outright failure of his philosophy of 'Ahinsa'. Hindus had listened to him for long, but in vain. Congress had contested 1945 elections on the promise of 'No Partition'. But, they couldn't stop it. It was breach of promise.
Partition had exposed the false bubble of 'Hindu-Muslim unity'. No Hindu was ready to listen to Gandhi. Even Congress had stopped listening to Gandhi as for them, that old man who used to constantly seat on Dharna was a headache. Many of the congress leaders were not Gandhivadi. But they needed Gandhi as people were with him. But after independence, Gandhi was no more useful to them. Gandhiji himself used to complain that nobody(incl Nehru & Patel) listens to me. Many people used to suggest him to go to Himalayas.
All the people who came to India from Pakistan were also angry with Gandhi. Gandhi had become a burden on Hindu Society. The limitations of his principle of 'Extreme Ahinsa' was exposed in front of entire world. Had Gandhi lived, he would have seen his own philosophy dying in front of his own eyes. Before his assassination, Gandhi was a leader who had lost his credibility, whom Hindu & Sikh refugees hated to the core. Hindutvavadi movement was gaining ground after partition due to all this. Hindu community was becoming politically aware which earlier used to blindly follow Gandhi. At the same time, differences between Nehru & Sardar Patel were growing on Economic as well as political issues incl Hindu Muslim riots. Moulana Azad had accused Home Minister Patel of going soft on reaction of Hindu rioters against Muslims in Delhi. He was accused of being anti Muslim. Differences between Nerhu & Patel had reached extreme level and Patel had tendered his resignation to Gandhiji. In future, internal fights between Congress & Gandhiji, Nerhu & Patel etc were inevitable.
Plus, Pakistan was constantly trying to destabilize Indian territory. Infighting between Nehru & Patel had led to the possibility of split within Congress party. All these was leading to Public losing confidence in Congress govt. So, if Congress wanted to remain in power then they circumstances would have forced them to respect the sentiments of Hindus & oppose Pakistan in every way possible & thus become a supporter of 'Akhand Bharat'. All these would have taken place naturally. Also, as a representative of Hindu Mahasabha Shymaprasad Mukherjee had joined Nehru govt as a minister on the advice of Veer Savarkar. Hindu Mahasabha & Mukherjee would have stregthened the hands of Sardar Patel in case of any split in the congress and thereby stregthen the Hindu Cause. But, sudenely Godse assassinated Gandhi & all these chaos stopped at once. Entire country came to standstill. Hindu-Muslim riots stopped immediately. When governor general Mountbatten reached Birla Mandir some hours after assassination, someone said "Assassin is Muslim". He replied "You fool, he is Hindu". Later on his secretary asked him "How did u know he is Hindu?"
Mountbatten replied "I didn't knew. But, what I knew is had he been Muslim, then India would have seen worst riots & it would have lead to ethnic cleansing of Muslims". N. Kurundkar who considers Gandhiji as his Ideal has written - "In this atmosphere of Hindu Muslim riots, Gandhiji's Moral Influence was the only thing which could have saved Muslims. But that influence was also fading away. His Calcutta Hunger strike had little success But, Delhi Hunger Strike totally failed. His Moral Influence would have totally ended in next few months. Had he not got assassinated, then Muslims were without any Messiah. The shock of Gandhiji's Assassination was so big that entire India came to a standstill. And Communal riots stopped immediately. To be honest, Muslims should at some point THANK NATHURAM GODSE BECAUSE GANDHIJI's ASSASSINATION SAVED MUSLIMS. Hindutvavadi's never understood that they could have had revenge against Muslims only if Gandhiji would have been alive . The situation was such that they could have defeated Gandhiji only if he had been alive. Gandhiji got assassinated and he won. And MUSLIMS GOT A PERMANENT WEAPON OF GANDHI ASSASSINATION TO THROW ON THE FACE OF HINDUS. The Hindu mind which was enraged due to parition & its aftermath, got cooled down and indirectly forgave muslims. Nathuram never forecasted this. Those who were shouting 'Eye for an eye' also got emotional due to Gandhiji's assassination." Because of this, Hindu Mahasabha became untouchable. Many brahmins were killed. Savarkar lost his credibilty & all his Fight for Freedom became useless in the eyes of public immediately till he got acquitted. Someone has written - "Godse shot 3 bullets. 1st was for Gandhiji. 2nd was for Savarkar. And 3rd was for those who used to speak up for Hindus" Whatever Godse said in Court & his ideology was effectively killed by his own act. It ended the possibility of nuanced debate on Gandhiji, nuanced debated on Muslim mentality of 'Universal Islamic Brotherhood', 'Dar-ul-Islam' & 'Dar-ul-harb'. To talk anything about Muslims became Hindu Superiority, Brahminical patriarchy. To talk in favour of Muslims and to mock Hinduism became another definition of Modernization & Liberalism. It helped Gandhism & ended 'Hindutva'. Hindu Mahasabha became a Godse's party in the minds of public. Shymaprasad Mukherjee decided to float 'Bhartiy Jansangh'. The word Hindu was excluded from it, not because they were not hindutvavadis, but because Gandhi's Assassination made 'Hindu' a bad word in Politics. The work of entire generation ended in a moment because of a decision of Godse&Co which was taken only on the basis of emotions without thinking about its consequences. Nehru got unchallenged control over entire congress and carried the legacy of Gandhi only for politics.
